RIAA Music Download Controversy!

The opinion expressed in this video does not encourage any criminal activity nor support illegally downloading music, motion pictures and television shows. Anyone who advocates the illegal downloading of music, motion pictures, and television could face criminal charges, lawsuits and seizure of your electronic devices. Penalties could reach up to $250,000 or five years (5) in prison.

In June 2009, a Minnesota mother has been ordered to pay over $1.92 million in damages.

In 2004, Mrs. Jammie Thomas-Rassett was the first of hundreds of illegal downloading lawsuits filed the Recording Industry ociation of America (RIAA).

The Movie industry and music industry are blaming peer-to-peer file sharing for the recent decline in television, radio, music sales, motion picture releases and the entertainment industry.

Rock, Hip-Hop, Jazz, Country, Gospel, Bluegrass, Reggae, Classical Rhythm and Blues, Popular Music, Oldies, Eclectic, Nursery Rhymes, and even food and television themes are under the RIAA.

The RIAA has been criticized harshly for the excess lawsuits.

Do two wrongs make a right?

Note: The purpose of the RIAA:

1. to protect intellectual property rights worldwide and the First Amendment rights of artists;
2. to perform research about the music industry;
3. to monitor and review relevant laws, regulations and policies.

Thanks to the subscribers, friends and supporters of the videos. To all critics, do me a favor: “Prove Me Wrong!”

Most of the popular video platforms like YouTube, Google, and Yahoo!, plus cool video publishing tools like Blip.TV and VideoEgg, stream video to computers as a Flash file. The file launches a nice video player on your Web browser. Flash has become truly ubiquitous, which is great; it means that virtually everyone can watch video without much hassle. However, there are limitations in quality and the ability to save files. Some experts predict that increased demand will make Flash video look worse and buffer more slowly.

Some smart vloggers like Andrew Baron of RocketBoom provide visitors with options to view and save some files of various size and formats. These vloggers use distribution protocols (including peer-to-peer) so the files download really fast. Distributing quality files is going to become increasingly important as video will inevitably be shown on big screen TV. So receiving high quality video clips will become an imperative. (Beet.TV is going HD this fall, I kid you not!)

We caught up with Robert Levitan, founder and CEO of Pando, a developer of software for sharing large size videos and other big files. It’s built on the BitTorrent open source platform. Earlier this month, Walt Mossberg gave the software a rave review. We’ve been using Pando to send around some of our big Beet.TV files — and it works really well. So, we decided to get the “download” on all of this from Robert. (Oh, and it was the neighborly thing to do as Pando and Beet.TV are in the very same landmark building in Manhattan’s groovy Flatiron District — so Robert just took an elevator to the Beet factory for his interview.)

Tips for Getting Downloads - and Cash!

1)Seed files on bittorent
Hundreds of thousands of people use bittorent daily, creating endless oppurtunities for you! For example, you can create a zip file with a passworded zip inside. Leave a readme.txt saying to retrieve the password you have to download it at your download link here on sharecash! You’d be surprised at how many people will start downloading your text file!

2)Post to forums
There are a plethora of web forums on the internet with millions of users. Many forums have sections for downloads, and some are even dedicated to solely providing files. Upload a file that you know will be popular and post it to some active file sharing boards, and let the downloads - and cash - roll in!

3)What kind of files?
There are millions of uploaded files on the internet, but you want to find the one that will be the most popular and get the most downloads. These normally are videos of some popular event, like a soccer tournament, pdf’s or free ebooks, game demos, game cheats, music files… the list goes on and on. Just make sure the file isn’t copyrighted or sexually explicit!

4)Use youtube
Youtube is the new fronteir for internet marketing. By simply creating a video about a program, a song, a band, etc, and giving the user a download link in the video description will score you thousands of downloads, and dollars!

5)Peer-to-peer file sharing
Many people use peer-to-peer file sharing networks, like limewire or emule, to share files. You can use this as a spinoff of the bittorent technique, but instead of seeding your file just share it on these networks and let the downloads start rolling in!

European Politicians Launch Pro-Filesharing Campaign

http://iwouldntsteal.net/

Download video: http://torrents.thepiratebay.org/3984333/iwouldntsteal.net.divx.3984333.TPB.torrent

Greens EFA, a coalition of two political parties that currently have 42 seats in the European parliament, have launched a pro-filesharing campaign named “I Wouldn’t Steal”. Their goal is to counter the anti-piracy propaganda put forward by the entertainment industry, and encourage people to download and share.

The message put forward by the parties is pretty strong: “Whenever you rent a movie, the multinational media industry forces you to watch their propaganda. They claim that downloading movies is the same as snatching bags, stealing cars or shoplifting. That’s simply not true — making a copy is fundamentally different from stealing.”

Greens EFA claim that the entertainment industry exploits artists and sell propaganda, and want to make the public aware of this. We couldn’t agree more of course, and it is good to see that these established political parties are attempting to decriminalize filesharing. As they write: “The media industry has failed to offer viable legal alternatives and they will fail to convince consumers that sharing equals stealing. Unfortunately, they have succeeded in another area — lobbying to adapt laws to criminalize sharing, turning consumers into criminals.”

In collaboration with RåFILM the parties created a short clip for the campaign. which they made available on BitTorrent by uploading it to The Pirate Bay. It’s beginning to look like things are finally starting to change, politicians are not scared anymore to embrace BitTorrent sites such as The Pirate Bay, and stand up for people’s right to share culture.

The Pirate Bay is of course delighted by the campaign and even updated the logo on their frontpage to show their support. Pirate Bay’s Brokep told TorrentFreak: “I love that there are smart people that understand how the world works and I’m gonna support them with whatever means I can”.

Let’s hope the entertainment industry is paying attention as well.

Inside Lars Eric Mattsson’s mind!

April 2008
Managers
Lesser known bands and musicians often seem to think that if they can only get a manager they will be more successful. In real life this is generally not true! What a manager can do for you is nothing that you can’t do by yourself and they are going to be charging you money for every minute they work for you. The number one dream seem to be to be able to go on tour as support act for a well known band. Support acts are never paid and they will actually have to pay for all the costs ociated with touring by themselves. A management can’t change this fact and they will never put their own money into your career. In the old days, before file sharing killed this business sometimes a big label could invest in their acts tours but thise days are gone now. When it comes to getting noticed by a label you can easily find the information you need by yourself rather than having a manager do it for you.

March 2008
Everybody’s lying
One thing I was told very early about the music business was that when it comes to sales and success “everybody is lying”. I did not believe it then but I later found out that this really is the case. Most record labels, distributors and specially artists are sugar coating the truth when they are asked about their sales. In this business very few people are making a lot of money, it’s very common that a record cost more money to produce that you can earn from it, specially in these days of illegal file sharing. If you want to make money, then you should become a lawyer or a business man - don’t think you can get rich from making cool music. Of course there are exceptions but then again, some people also do make a fortune from lottery. Yes - I would say the odds are about the same, and skill has very little to do with it… So why would people have to be lying about these things? The truth is that as an artist you are trying to sell the image of yourself and the cooler (or more successful) you appear to be, the more interesting you look… If you you tell people you only sold 400 copies of your album then you don’t seem to be nowhere as cool as if you claim you sold 10 000, or why not 60 000! And the same goes for your last gig, a sold-out venue or 25 drunken morons who just came for the beer:-)
