Google I/O 2009 - Mastering the Android Media Framework

David Sparks

Some monks might take a vow of silence, but Android certainly hasn’t. Attend this session, and help your app find its voice. Android engineer David Sparks will explore the multimedia capabilities of the Android platform, lifting the covers on the infrastructure to show you how it works and the right (and wrong!) ways to use it. You’ll learn how things work under the hood, how to dodge the common media-related developer pitfalls, and how to write secure and battery-efficient media code

Google I/O 2009 - How Do I Code Thee? Let Me Count the Ways

Dan Morrill

The primary way to develop apps for Android is using managed code that runs in the Dalvik virtual machine. Yet, Android also includes a super-modern Browser that includes Gears. It’s even possible to build parts of your apps in native code (that is, C.) Choice is good, but it does mean one more decision for the developer to make — and in this case, a big decision. Should you write your app in managed code, to integrate cleanly and seamlessly with the system? Should you write your app in the Browser as “Ajax plus”, so that it can run on multiple phone platforms? Or should you go for raw speed, and write part of it in ARM-processor native code? There’s no universal answer to these questions, but in this session Dan Morrill will teach you to pick the technique that works best for your app. In this session, you’ll get a demonstration of each technique, and learn how to apply them to your own apps.

Google Tech Talks
October, 30 2007

ABSTRACT

After three years of research and development on a distributed storage system, we are ready to unveil the result: Wuala. Wuala is a new way of storing, sharing, and publishing files on the internet. Unlike traditional online storage systems, Wuala is decentralized and can harness idle resources of participating computers to build a large, secure, and reliable online storage. This enables its users to trade parts of their local storage for online storage and it allows us to provide a better service for free. In the talk, I will explain what Wuala is and how it works, and I will also show a demo. All attendees will also get an invitation code to join the early alpha version.

Speaker: Dominik Grolimund
I am 26 years old and have studied computer science at ETH Zurich. In 1998, I founded my software company Caleido, and developed the Caleido Address-Book, a professional contact management software, of which over 35′000 licenses have been sold so far in Switzerland, Germany and Austria.

In 2003, I did an exchange semester at the TU Delft, the Netherlands, as part of the Unitech exchange program, focusing on business and management. In 2004, a six-month internship followed with Siemens Corporate Research in Princeton, New Jersey in the US, where I worked in the ‘Intelligent Vision & Reasoning’ department, developing a prod…

This video was made in response to a lot of questions I’ve been asked regarding how to do something, what program to use, etc. Some of it is “beginner”-type stuff, especially at the beginning, but just bear with it, it gets better towards the end. And if nothing else, you get to spend about nine minutes jamming to the immortal Ennio Morricone, so it shouldn’t be a total loss! It contains all the websites and programs I use to make my vids, and is the end result of a LOT of “googling”. I googled so you don’t have to!
To my knowledge all these sites/software are safe; at least I haven’t had any problems with any of them.

A brief word about Peer Guardian 2. I received a nasty phone call from the Motion Picture ociation some time ago. Seems they were rather upset with me downloading movies that were still in the theaters! They gave me the ol’ “Blah blah prison sentence blah blah heavy fine yada-yada-yada” routine, and actually convinced Roadrunner to terminate my service(temporarily). If I’d had PG2 then, that conversation would’ve never happened. Since installing it, I have been AMAZED to find out just how much traffic was going in and out of my computer. Not any more! Now I wonder how I ever got by without it. If downloading movies/music is your thing, I can’t stress how important it is that you get this program. It is second only to a good anti-virus program.

Google Tech Talks June 14, 2008 ABSTRACT IGlobal online services at Amazon, eBay, Myspace, YouTube, or Google serve millions of customers with tens of thousands of servers located throughout the world. At this scale, components fail continuously and it is difficult to maintain a consistent state while hiding failures from the application. Peer-to-peer protocols provide availability by replicating services among peers, but they are mostly limited to write-once/read-many data sharing. To …
